So What Is Vertigo?

Thursday, February 21, 2008

Am a bit late with this blog, why? last week I was a sick puppy, and am still recovering. When young, getting sick and recovering would take 4 to 6 days, now it takes 2 to 3 times longer to recover. So early last week had a viral attack on my bronchial system, then toward the end of the week, as that recovered my sinus was attacked. Then, as usual the last phase of recovering from any sickness meant getting asthma for about 2 days. However, this time, just as the asthma was clearing up, I got bad case of vertigo. Have had this vertigo for 2 days now. Vertigo is terrible, worst than any sickness I can remember.

So what is vertigo?

Vertigo is a major symptom of a balance disorder. It is the sensation of spinning or swaying while the body is stationary with respect to the earth or surroundings. There are two types of vertigo: subjective and objective. Subjective vertigo is when a person feels a false sensation of movement. Objective vertigo is when the surroundings will appear to move past a person's field of vision.

The effects of vertigo may be slight. It can cause nausea and vomiting and, if severe, may give rise to difficulty with standing and walking.

Causes of vertigo

Vertigo is usually associated with a problem in the inner ear balance mechanisms (vestibular system), in the brain, or with the nerve connections between these two organs.

Vertigo can also be a symptom of an inner ear infection. Vertigo can also be brought on suddenly through various actions or incidents, such as sudden changes of blood pressure or as a symptom of motion sickness while sailing, riding amusement rides, airplanes or in a motor vehicle.

My case was severe, had to crawl to the bathroom last night because I could not balance to stand and walk. I believe am experiencing “objective vertigo” defined above. This afternoon, am feeling better, can walk a bit unsteady, but still feel very nauseated.

Currently am hanging out at my address in Mountain View CA. This is my “home” since my friends, the Chegwidden’s, Vickie, Scott and baby Alice, adopted me. I have many most excellent friends.

Next Tuesday, 26 Feb, me and Bigfoot heading south to Burbank CA, in Los Angeles CA, about 400 mi. and spend the evening with sister Elsbeth and her family. Then on Wed head out to Phoenix Arizona, about 340 miles east.
