Hotter than Buns on Fire

Saturday, June 14, 2008

Cycling in the dessert around La Quinta, CA, a few miles east of Palm Springs. And it is hot.

They call it Palm Spring, why? They are everywhere.

Me, Fri eve after dinner with Cindy. She refused to be photographed. But you can see her in may previous blogs.

Am still in La Quinta CA. I will head east to Lake Pleasant, Arizona, on Monday. Lake Pleasant is around 40 miles north east of Phoenix AZ.

La Quinta has been fun, except for one minor detail, it is very hot. Today will be 108 F = 42 C. Around 9:00 pm, it is 93 F = 34 C. Brother #2, John asked in an e-mail, “... what attracts all these retirees there? I know there are 100th of golf courses and it gets super COLD and super HOT. Since you are there, maybe you can find out the secret!”. So one day, am in the pool at the RV resort, 5:30 pm, and it was 104 F = 40 C, there was a couple, they looked retired. So I asked them, they live here at the resort all year long. Their answer was “I love this heat, and love all the activities during the winter season”. In the winter, for about 5 month, the population in this area swells to around 3 times, maybe more. That is all from the snow-birders escaping the mean winters in N America. They either rent for 5 months, or they own homes here. Winter daytime temp are around 75 F = 24 C, late at night it is around 45 F = 7 C.

It was fun being here, got to hangout with my friend/family Cindy, who has a second home here in La Quinta.

She was visiting for nearly a week, Cindy loves heat, specially in the evening. Cindy bikes and golfs, and golfing in the Palm Spring area is, well, this says it all, “the Palm Springs Desert Resorts area is known as the "golf capital of the world," featuring more than 125 unique Palm Springs area golf courses, ...”. Yes, there are people out golfing even when its 108 F = 42 C. And Cindy will be there golfing today and tomorrow. I biked early in the morning, by 7:00 am and done by 9:30 am. Today will take the scooter and explore the nearby Salton Sea, a large lake in the desert.
