It Is Hotter Than Hell Here

Monday, June 7, 2010

As I walked on the deck to the restaurant for lunch and a Margarita at the Lake Mead marina, this fish follow you along the deck. They are begging for food, there is no fishing from the deck, so this fish hang out there and grow big, they are around 30 in long, they would make a great catch.

Some one threw some bread or something in to water along the deck. You get about 50 large fish on the surface scrambling for a piece.

I came to Lake Mead just to enjoy hiking and biking on the great paved bike path, which they call The River Mountain Trail. That is probably unusual, since most people come here to enjoy water activities, boating, lots of jet skies, or just overnight passing thru. But the day after I got here, extreme heat arrived.

After two evenings, was feeling kind of down. Saturday morning did a short ride on the bike path; but that eve the temp was only 82 F at 1:00 am. I tell you, it is very hard to sleep when it is that warm. Had to use the RV air conditioner to drop the temp to 72 F and a fan before it felt comfortable. So Sunday morning was feeling kind of down, the temp was going to 112 F and it is not fun at all to be outdoors doing any activity except on or in the lake. At 8:30 am, the temp was already 92 F. To get out of that funk or make it worse, decided to go on a hike. Packed a 1.5 gal of cool water, and headed off at 9:00 am. As I hiked to the Lake from the RV park, 0.75 mi, saw a couple of runners, that inspired me, after all this years I still get an adrenaline rush just seeing runners. So, if they can run in this heat, then I should stop being a wimp and hike. Then as I approached the lake, saw bicycle riders getting ready to head out in this heat. I stopped and observed them getting ready. By then that funk feeling was gone, I was inspired, If they can bike in this heat, then so can I.

After hiking 2.75 mi, the temp was 97 F. That is nasty hot, it felt hotter. I had used up 0.75 gallon of water, half of my water by then. So realized I was not going very far, it was time to head back to the RV. I was out there for 3 hours, covered 4 mi, used 1.3 gallons of water, with a total hiking time of 1 hr, 45 min. Pitiful that was. It was 102 F when I finished at noon. I also saw the bike riders finishing up. I did not stress my body as far as I could tell. But did I say it was nasty, I can always tell when I stress my body. Tried to pick up the pace the last 200 yards, when I got to the RV breathing the hot air was suffocating. Got inside the RV set the air conditioner temp at 90 F, and sat down for 30 min to recuperate. That last 200 yards was nasty.

The air conditioners in RV's are not very efficient, the best you can do without over working them is about 12 to 15 or so degrees below the outside temp. I noticed that some of the RV's have 2 air conditioners, mine has only one. So RV'ing with Bigfoot in extreme heat, over 100 F is not very comfortable unless the eve temp drops below 80 F.

I will hangout here for a couple more days, bike tomorrow morning, and hike the next day. Then am heading out of this hotter than hell heat, to Williams AZ, it is 30 deg cooler there, it is 200 mi away, and is only 60 mi from the Grand Canyon south rim RV park. There the next adventure will start. The next 2 days is going to be torture, as there is nothing for me to do in the intense heat after being done biking or hiking at around 11:00 am.
