A Great Beach Walk in Samoa Calif
Sunday, August 27, 2017
When you hike in the California Coastal Forest, you often run into the Banana Slog. This creatures are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and reproduce by exchanging sperm with their mate. And after mating both “happily” leave pregnant. Just stuff you want to know, right ?
Found this one high on an apple tree. Of course an apple tree is not native to Coastal Forests, so likely many years ago someone probably threw an apple core away, and nature worked it. And It seems that ground squirrels delight on the apples.
Have been craving a beach walk for months. Here in Eureka, Calif is a great place for beach walks. Have always had an affinity for beach walks, makes me happier. Why ? Maybe because, as my father once told me, I was 2 yrs old, and the family went out for a beach day back in the old country, Venezuela. Anyhow, being at the beach for a few minutes, parents ask where is Rouel ? Looked around, there was a butt sticking out on a wave, ran picked me up, and I was laughing away. The waves, the sounds and the ocean air, that must be it !! My older siblings will remember it as the Club Nautico beach.
It is noon, as you can see, just me and the runner ( foot prints ) going in opposite direction at the beach for miles. Walked north and back for 5.8 mi. Today is a warm 71 deg, but yesterday for the beach walk was 65 deg. Maybe that’s why no one else was there. Ocean temp ~ 53 deg, likely only surfers in wetsuits brave those temp.
On beach walks always on the lookout for Sand Dollars, only found broken pieces, and practically all the sea shells where broken. Likely not far from the beach the ocean bottom is very rocky, hence waves and currents smash the shells to pieces. On the walk, found only these not broken up. Was I walking on water, screen shot on the right, no, must be high tide, here 6 ft is typical. so ocean can recede, 40 to 60 yards. Off to another walk I go, now in the harbor, and it is 10:00 am, and later, late afternoon another beach walk going south. Got to do it before heading inland tomorrow.
