The Great CVW of 2017
Tuesday, July 4, 2017
It is always spectacular to see San Francisco from the bay.
CVW = Crazy Vickie Walk. Yep, it happened, Jul 1st thru Jul 4th, 2017. The previous Great CVW was 5 yrs ago, click link: . Now, we have done many CVWs, but Great CVWs are naturally special. This time there were only the two of us doing it, Vickie and me, Rouel.
Vickie turns 55 yrs old, so we had to do a 55 miles Great CVW. We went for executing this Great CVW over a 4 day period. This allowed to do various locations in the area.
Day 1: It started 1 July 2017, at 7:19 am with a Caltrain ride arriving in San Francisco at 8:38 am. A short fast 1.6 mi warm up walk to the Ferry Building. The Ferry ticket window and kiosk was closed, no signs, and no easily discernible schedule for a ferry to Tiburon.
Next available ferry to Tiburon was from Pier 41, at 9:45 am, and we are 1.5 mi away. Even walking very very fast, might not make it.
Solution: A pedal-taxi ride to the Pier 41, 1.5 mi, in about 7 min. Yep, we made with plenty of time to spare.
We were surprised that the ferry made a stop at Angel Island. And would guess over 150 people got off the ferry there; then there were only about 20 people left to go to Tiburon.
BTW, we must do an adventure walk in Angel Island. Maybe even camping.
Arriving at the dock in Tiburon.
Walking from the Tiburon ferry dock to the Golden Gate Welcome Center, and a little beyond is an awesome walk. It is only 15.8 mi. ... And with the 1.6 mi walk to the Ferry Bldg, we only got 17.4 mi.
Close to the Golden Gate, and then on the Golden Gate.
Scott and the kids picked us up in San Francisco. The traffic to the Golden Gate bridge was spectacularly slow, looked like about 1 mph, so we walked to the car on their way to the bridge.
I must be getting old, usually I take tons of photos.
Day 2: Sun 2 Jul: We left from the Chegs home, Scott and kids in the car, we went to Berkeley. Had a nice breakfast there. Scott being a University of California-Berkeley grad, with many years of cycling there is intimately familiar with the area.
Yep, a little walkabout thru Berkeley, 15.3 mi:
We met up with Scott and the kids at about 6 mi into our walk, at the park by the Berkeley Rose Gardens. The kids had a lot fun there on the cement slide.
Have to use cardboard to slide down, or be tuff and get ripped pants and cement rash.
Vickster was in heaven looking at all the awesome homes in Berkeley Hills. They looked like villas. Like I said, must be getting old, didn't get photos of those spectacular homes in the Berkeley Hills. Play the videos, the above is a gif, meaning a series of photos taken close together in time. It may play by it self. If the video at left does not play, then my apologies.
We met up the kids again at around mi 11, at Indian Rock Park. And then the final push to Cesar E Chavez Park, for 15.3 mi walk day. We had dinner, pizza and ice scream.
Day 3: Mon 3 Jul, this was a short day, only 10.5 mi. Scott and the kids accompanied us on this adventure walk. Scott and Alice on rollerblades, and Joseph on his bike. We walked in San Jose, thru Downtown and San Jose State University, and downtown Willow Glen.
Walking thru a college campus always calms my soul, and brings back happy college memories. And I have tons of them, with and from my still college buddies. We group text a lot these days, and carry on like we did in those younger days.
Alice and Scot on rollerblades.
Of course, along the way, Joseph up a tree.
Day 4: 4th of Jul, we were back in San Francisco, Caltrain to SF, to do a walkabout in San Francisco. A stroll thru Chinatown, and up the stairs to Coit Tower, and the coastal trails.
Visiting San Francisco Coit Tower, ... you must go up the at least 400 stairs. Click Here.
BTW, you can’t do a walkabout in San Francisco without walking up the Worlds Most Crookedest Street. So, from Coit Tower we headed to it, Expect lots of foot traffic up the stairs. Did a selfie at the top, and that was all. Want to know more Click Here.
From the crookedest street walked to the Golden Gate Bridge, walked under it to pick up the coastal trail.
Golden Gate Bridge far behind us on the Coastal Trail.
Sometimes I think we are tough characters, but then someone shows up who is tougher. This character was going way up and way down on the Coastal Trail on his unicycle. And that is really tough.
Onward we went to and thru Golden Gate Park to our finish line with 15.5 mi. at the California Academy of Science.
The Great CVW 2017, ended up with a total of 58 mi and 139,894 steps. And a GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL !!
